From Memory to Peace Education: Closing Ceremony

The project’s closing ceremony gathered on Friday December 20, 2013 around 25 participants including teachers, principals frompartner schools (schools PPM have implemented activities with over the past years), in addition to academics, civil society members, and representatives from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE).

The main purpose of this meeting was to recap the achievements of PPM for 2013 and distribute the lesson plans on memory and peace and showcase samples of the work.

The gathering opened with a note from Joseph Younes, a representative of the Educational Centre for Research and Development, the responsible entity of Ministry of Education that deals with curriculum and teacher training.

The director of PPM FadiAbiAllam also spoke about the pivotal role of building a culture of peace and its importance in this time period. Ziad Saab discussed PPM’s achievements in schools, summer camps, major events like Marathon and International Day of Peace. Olga Farhat described the framework used for developing the modules on memory and peace.

Then there was space to discuss suggestions for the future.

Regarding the lesson plans, Maysa Mourad discussed the general framework of why the memory lens was used. Basically how memory is a place to think of the past; for example, how do we get the student to relate to subjects like history, events they have not usually experienced, except for what they have heard or read? Once we understand memory, we can have a better awareness of the history/past and its impact on the present, and hence seek relevancy in creating a positive vision for the future. She then showcased briefly the lesson plans in “Deconstructing Memory”.
