Peaceful Sit-In In Front of the National Museum

Given that Lebanese citizens have the right to live in peace and security, and since any recourse to violence instead of dialogue is a rejected option, dozens of Lebanese citizens gathered, in peaceful protests, in front of Beirut National Museum, Monday, January 24th 2011, upon the invitation of Permanent Peace Movement (PPM); They held white banners and candles, expressing in silence their anger, indignation and disappointment about the bitter situation Lebanon is going through.

During the gathering, a word by PPM’s president Fady Abi Allam was distributed to the protesters, in which he considered that recourse to violence in politics internally is not justifiable and is nothing but national betrayal that shouldn’t be accepted in any way, under any circumstances. Mr. Abi Allam highlighted in his word the importance of dialogue and communication in reaching a solution to the various conflicts.

Mr. Abi Allam also called upon the Lebanese society to gather around the state institutions, saying they are the only guarantor of security and stability; he warned young Lebanese from getting involved in any militia activities considering such activities real suicide for both the youth and the Lebanese society, as they provide nothing but fake protection. He also called upon the media to assume responsibility in this difficult time, and to play the role of a peace builder rather than being a tool for fight. Likewise, he invited clergymen to preach tolerant values and work on guiding leaders towards noble and honorable goals. As for politicians, he asked them to prioritize Lebanon’s interest over their communities’ interest making concessions for the good of the nation.

Last but not least, Mr. Abi Allam called for solidarity between the civil society institutions and the Lebanese people, in order to be able to express the people’s pains and concerns.
